Homemade Laudry Detergent ingredientsA few months ago, I saw a story on the CNN.com web site about people making Green changes to their daily lives. One of those changes was making your own Homemade Laudry Detergent. I began to think about this, and looked at the prices of Laundry Detergent on the shelves at the grocery store. Have you noticed that the prices of laundry related items have gone up, while the package sizes have gone down? I have!

The price of a 75 fl. oz. (2.21L) bottle of a name brand detergent is approaching $14. The items to make multiple 2 gallon batches is less than $10.00.

I just made my second batch…. This is after almost finishing the first batch… By the way, the recipe I use is the first one in the list of links to the left, it makes about 2 gallons of detergent! I love it… have no plans to go back to the store bought variety.

$3.29 => Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
$2.29 => 20 Mule Team Borax

    $0.99

=> 1 Bar Fels Naptha
$6.57 + sales tax

Back to the Traditional Post

Marian June 10th, 2008

For the past several months I have treated this area as a Photo Journal… But, recently decided to change back to a more traditional Journal page! I still continue to Photo Journal, you can get there by clicking here

Things have been a little chaotic since the 22nd, when school ended for the year. I spent a good bit of the time building a swing for Roy… It is more than just a yard toy. I designed it to allow him to grow into it, rather than outgrow the swing. It's constructed out of 5 4×4s, 2 2×6s, 2 2×4s, and several carriage bolts, and swing hardware. It will allow 2 adults to simultaneously swing… and the cross board doesn't bow….It has been in use for a few weeks, and it has already made a huge difference in Roy's sensory needs.

He is already packing for our trip to Colorado. What a time of year to go to the desert!

We have learned something in our preparations for the trip, actually, we were reminded of something we already knew. People with disabilities,   get into National Parks for life for free. You have to present National Park folks with a letter from a Doctor stating the disability.

More to come later….

The Shed

Marian July 9th, 2007

Well, our friend Bill, who is a great “handy” guy, was almost finished with the repair of our shed, when he went inside to add concrete panels to the wall, when he found TERMITES. Well, that put everything behind, as far as finishing the shed….

We had some spray for carpenter ants and termites, Bill removed the door from the side shed and we are letting the area dry out and continue to spray the affected areas every day…

My husband, son, and I went out and cleared most of the area around the wall where the termites have nested. We moved thing, threw things out, and got rid of an old desk that was made of particle board that was falling apart, not just due to the termites but also the moisture that the old side shed configuration allowed to exacerbate!

Well, it will be a few weeks before we can get back in and remedy the damage to the shed. Bill won’t be available until then!

We will have to replace some of the plywood flooring, the wall in one section, the building was constructed right on top of the ground… Not on any kind of pier! Well, it will be repaired soon enough!

Wish us luck! :-)

SNOW……! It’s 15 April, where is spring?

Marian April 15th, 2007

I couldn’t believe when I woke this morning to look outside to see snow falling! This has been the weirdest Spring I think I have ever seen! First everything blooms in early March…. then, were have a hundred year freeze that has killed all of the new growth on trees and shrubs, as well as the flowers on the trees! everything was so beautiful…. Our Wisteria had bloomed for the first time in over 12 years! It was so pretty. Well, we got some snaps of it!! The bad side of this spring was that it was one of the worst on record for pollen counts being through the roof! Pollen has been so bad! People who have no real allergy problems were having problems! The up side, trees can only produce pollen once a year!

Finally Over It!

Marian March 9th, 2007

It all began the night /evening before Thanksgiving! That feeling. You know, like you’re coming down with something. Little did I know that I would still be fighting whatever it was into late February.

I had had a flu shot about 10 days earlier, but this was just a cold, or so I thought! When I really started having all of the symptoms, I took a coarse of Tamiflu, just in case the Flu shot hadn’t become effective, yet!

A month later, just after Christmas, I saw my doctor who prescribed a Zee-pac. Nothing happened.

Then into January, the cough and other stuff continued, beginning to feel worse, then February when I was really feeling rotten! The doctor determined that everything had become Pneumonia! Gave me a stronger, more specific antibiotic which did the trick.

Now, this week, I can say that I have had a few days where I can honestly say that I have felt great! I still get a bit fatigued in the afternoon, but I am getting some exercise and feeling, all-in-all, much better than a few months ago!

The weather has been sort of cool, and wet of late. But, now we have the beginnings of Spring. We went out on our first Photo Safari since last November, on 3 March. We went to Maple Hill Cemetery. It is the oldest continually used cemetery in Huntsville!

We are preparing for a holiday abroad. Hopefully, I will have lots-O-cool pictures to add to my gallery!

Bye-Bye from Me!

Cheers!

Our Winter Snow Pilgrimage

Marian January 2nd, 2007

Each year, we take a Winter holiday to see and experience snow and a nice dry cold…. I mean really cold.

We left Huntsville last Wednesday the 27th, and spent the night in Nashville, as we had a very early flight out to Calgary. We were a bit concerned, we had a connection in Denver and they had another blizzard in the forecast. But, we made it through with flying colours, and with all of our luggage. The storm hit Denver much later in the day. Almost everything was shut down again, but they were better prepared than they were for the pre-Christmas storm that wreaked havoc.

We stay at a very kid friendly place in Banff. They have a huge indoor play structure as well as 2 indoor water slides, 2 hot tubs, a kiddie pool, and a smaller pool. Attached is a small grocery store, laundromat, and spirits store.

On New Year’s eve we went over to Lake Louise, and Dan ice skated on the lake while the kids and I went inside the Chateau for a cup of hot chocolate. Then on New Years Day, we went back to Lake Louise for a Sleigh Ride. It was beautiful. We went most of the way down the lake which is just over a mile long. We watched Ice Climbers preparing to climb a frozen waterfall, then we turned back to the chateau and a snack before the hour drive back to Banff.

I have taken a few snaps, they can be seen with some of my other photos, the link is on the right. But Danny has uploaded a few pictures to his album as well, click here for a look!

I will try to make another post as time permits. See you when we return. The kids are back in school next Monday.
